A FINE 10-BORE 'ROYAL' FACILE PRINCEPS SELF-ACTING EJECTOR, serial no. 36937,
32in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels, file-cut raised tapered rib with a banner engraved 'W.W. GREENER. 68 HAYMARKET LONDON. WINNER AT THE LONDON GUN TRIALS, 1876. 1877. 1878 & 1879', the breech end with a cartouche engraved 'PATENT WEDGE FAST', the tubes engraved with fine floral and acanthus scroll detailing to the breech ends and muzzles, 3in. chambers, bored approx. 3/4 and full choke, scroll-back treble-grip action with carved serpentine fences, hold-open toplever gold-inlaid with a crown and with 'jumping jack' return stud, manual side-safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, incorporating Greener's improved ejector patent 2003 of 1881, use number 1175, the action profusely engraved with fine scrollwork surrounding numerous game scene vignettes of hound and fowl, the underside with two rabbits, the triggerguard with a retriever with fowl, retaining traces of colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/4in. well-figured pistolgrip stock with ornate chequering borders, horn-inlaid drop points and horn buttplate, the fore-end decorated en suite and with Deeley & Edge patent release catch and horn finial, weight 10lb. 10oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1888 as a 10-bore "Royal" with 32in. 'KLS damascus' barrels. It was started on the 18th June and finished on the 26th October and shipped to New York.
At the time of manufacture it would have sold for 60 guineas, with the firm charging an extra guinea for 10-bores, and an extra 5 guineas for 8-bores
